Did Russia ever produce scale models?

More than a couple of hundreds of scale models (metal and plastic) were in mass production in the former Soviet Union - mainly in Russia. Industrial production of scale models in the USSR began in early seventies. Read more in the Articles and Reviews from 'Scale Models From Russia' Series.

Here are some comments of international experts:

Dana Johnson (Diecast Toy Collectors Association, Dana Johnson Enterprises):
"There have been numerous diecast toys made in the USSR, originally intended for the privileged children of visiting dignitaries. Since Perestroika, the former Soviet Union has been capitalizing on the popularity of USSR collectibles by marketing them wholesale in the US and Europe. Typical retail value is around $15-$20, a bargain considering the generally excellent quality seen in these Russian toys."

Edward Bulman (USA):
"I am pretty knowledgeable about Russian diecast. I probably have the largest collection in the US ( big fish in a very small pond ;) ). Some of the lines are no longer made, as the factories were converted to the production of other goods. I believe that this is true of the factory that had the former Mebetoy molds, as well as the line of the GAZ-AA, -AAA, and -60 trucks.
For a country that was fairly primitive when it came to consumer goods, it fielded a pretty impressive variety of diecast prior to 1989. There are a lot more available now, especially ones that are of very limited production, which are extremely well detailed but are rather expensive. It is also interesting to see how the major manufacturers there have started to incorporate a little more plastic in their vehicles. I have a Zil-4331 truck and trailer set that are all metal. Now the beds are made out of plastic.
You are right in that they are excellent value for the money. They are very reminiscent of the late '60s/ early '70s Corgis and Dinkys."

Arthur F. SINTEF II (President of Suffolk Scale model Club):
"I am a big fan of Russian models... I look for all the new companies coming out from Russia and The Czech Republics. Russian & Czech Models Are the Greatest."

Tom JONES
"Though I have not actually seen a Russian made toy, I have been very impressed with the details and the appearance of quality that I have seen on the Internet."

James LEGERE (Owner of Jim's Collectible Cards in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, Canada):
"One of my customers just showed me a Lomo-AVM 1/43 scale fire truck.  I was very impressed..."

Thomas BRADEN (Darmstadt, Germany):
"By the way, I have noticed with great pleasure what great models in 1/72 came out of Russia/Ucrainia/Belarus and even Moldavia in the last years. Their quality sometimes beats even top-class manufacturers such as Japan's Hasegawa. It is like people just have been waiting to be given the green light to go ahead with what they always wanted to do..."

Are model cars still being produced in Russia?

Investigate our regularly updated CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™" and you will learn a lot of information about today situation in this field. Some models (total number of items currently listed is more than 4500, mainly mini-models of automobiles) are known only in a limited circle of Russian collectors. As for foreign collectors, they are almost unfamiliar with scale models manufactured in the Soviet Union and new independent states.

Are Russian model cars usually in good condition? I once saw a Russian model car in a toy magazine and it looked pretty good.

It is difficult and simple question at the same moment. Difficult - because it is difficult to find the criterion of quality. Simple - because usually Russian model cars are really in good condition. And in any case the have high quality/price ratio. Soviet-made models may be divided into 2 groups: original models, and remakes produced with the help of famous international manufacturers (using their old used casts). The best example of the first type of models - those produced by Tantal(litan)/Radon(Agat) (main output - electronics, production of models began in 1972). Bodies and opening elements of the models are diecast and painted with original automobile enamels. Decorative elements such as bumper or radiator grille are made of metallized plastic. These models have highly detailed interiors and realistic exteriors. Dozens of Tanta(Litan)l/Radon(Agat) models have 2 main merits: high quality and exotic objects - they produce only self-designed (original) models of Soviet/Russian-made makes (only few manufacturers abroad the Former Soviet Union produce only few models of Soviet/Russian makes). Another merit - those models are still rare outside the Former Soviet Union. Actually the third merit exists too - those high-quality models are cheap (at least in Russia, and especially if to compare their cost with prices on the well-known brand names of the same level). The second type models usually have good quality of modeling and manufacturing, but occasionally - are badly manufactured or have poor design (that usually is compensated by low price). But even these models may be interesting for serious collectors too - they are the "continuation" of earlier manufactured in the West (and inaccessible now because of termination of original production) models and, anyway, are produced by very exotic manufacturers. Special case - hand-made models. Almost all of the are very high quality limited editions (but unfortunately not very cheap).

Where can I buy Russian models?

In 1970-80s only some car models were exported to the West by Novoexport, Zapchastexport and few other Soviet export companies. Unfortunately today situation is still almost the same - only small part of those models is known in the World collector scene. Main scale models dealers suggest some Russian/CIS-made models, but usually their price-lists contain only a couple of dozens of items - mainly mass-production regular editions of a few of major manufacturers. That is why since 1997 The PERESVET Ltd. began to supply the foreign dealers by hundreds (!) of items of Russian/CIS-made scale models, simultaneously selling those models by mail directly to collectors.

I couldn't find some models I have from the List. Is it only because they are probably out of production? Are there many models that are out of production and not in this List? Or is there another List for them as well?

No. The Author tried to make CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™" as complete as possible (including out-of-production models), but even today (updated) version (and the Author knows this) is still not 100% complete (even in the case of scale models of cars - and what to say about scale models of e.g. aircraft!). In some cases the Author did not put some models on the List (even having them in personal collection!) because those toys are not regarded as real models (but since many questions about those models began to come, some of those "models" were added too). But very often the Author simply does not know about the existence of some of such models, or knows, but is not sure that they really exist: the Author has to have the specific model in his own collection, or it's picture, or to see it, or at least to 100% trust to the source of information about the model for putting it on the List. That is why the Author appreciates all possible comments about the List and ANY riders. And in any case the author knows nothing about more completed source of information about that specific type of models, than CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™".

Is it possible to find models not mentioned in your Price-List?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Do not hesitate to ask SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ about not only those models from SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ Price-List, but about ANY model and SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ will do the best to find the model. Many Out-of-production or rare models are still available from retail vendors or private collectors. Usually we do not put such models on SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ Price-List (since we cannot guarantee the availability and stable prices for such cases), but very often we can find and buy the specific model for you.

Where can I find pictures of models you suggest?

Definitely the best source of such pictures - CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™". Actually, this CD is the most complete ever published systemized source of information about scale models of all types ever produced in the Soviet Union, CIS and Baltic states. Information is updated regularly, so new versions of floppy disks and CD will be issued regularly too. CDs contain the most complete sets of pictures of models and prototypes - image files in JPEG format.

Do you suggest only scale models?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

No. SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ also suggests scale models' accessories (e.g., original boxes for scale models, display cases, spare parts for scale models, 1:43 figures, etc.), books about scale models and even delineations (drawings) of originals and models. The most complete information (documents from the 'Scale Models From Russia' Series, complete set of pictures (image files) of models, text information about models, pictures of prototypes, information about prototypes and other information about scale models ever produced in the USSR and FSU independent states) is available on CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™". Information is updated regularly, so new versions of CD are issued regularly too.

Are all models available all the time?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Yes and No. "Yes", because even Out-of-production models theoretically may be found at any time - e.g. good source is private collections (but this usually means higher prices). "No", because even big manufacturers of mass production scale models (as Agat or Elecon) do not produce all models all the time. Usually specific models are produced only during a couple of months annually. So, in some cases it is necessary to wait some time when the specific model will be produced once again. In some times the production of some models (or specific editions) is ceased because of the damage of tools, etc. Some tools are bought now by private owners, who decide when to produce the specific model (depending on the market situation in Russia). In the case of small workshops or masters hand-made models are usually produced by small series (5-100 models) and nobody usually knows when a new series of the specific models will be produced again. Some high-quality handbuilts are not produced regularly (master-model was designed and some models were produced, but then the production was ceased) - it is necessary to order the production of this model and it will be produced for you personally (since in this case it is not necessary to design master-model, the cost of such model usually is not higher than the cost of regular hand-made model). But do not hesitate to ask about those models too!

How do models come - by post in a parcel?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Yes. SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ uses the Mail Service which you will choose - from cheap, but insecure and slow regular mail to expensive, but reliable and fast special services (such as DHL, UPS, Post International, etc.).

Is there a duty to pay?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Usually in the case of different items, low declared cost (up to $100 US) and private-to-private parcels this service is duty-free.

How can I pay?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Read about it in: HOW DO YOU OPERATE...

Now PERESVET Ltd. and SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ suggest two main ways of payment: by bank transfer directly to PERESVET Ltd. bank account (that is usually inconvenient for End-users) or to one of SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ Regional Representatives (e.g., in the USA) by any convenient for Customer way and with minimized expenses. Ask for details: barmasov@pobox.spbu.ru
Also one can pay by e.g. Western Union or MoneyGram

Who pays for delivery (Postal charge)?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

The Customer. And it may be done in two ways. SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ prefers this one: Special Mail Services usually suggest such service - Customer pays for delivery directly to the service after the receiving of parcel ("Freight Collect"). This way is the cheapest and the most convenient for the Customer. But unfortunately some cheap services do not suggest this service. In this case cost of the delivery must be added to the cost of your order and sent to SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ together with the payment for goods.

Should I insure the cargo?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

This is for you to decide. PERESVET Ltd. guarantees that everything will be OK with cargo till the stage of Russian Customs - unfortunately PERESVET Ltd. can not guarantee the goods safety at following stages. Usually there are no big problems with transportation in the case of well-known post services, but once in the practice of PERESVET Ltd. one box (of total five) was seriously damaged by... UPS! After all everything came to a good end, but... So, if one buys many alike and cheap models - insurance may be not necessary. But if you buy really exotic and expensive handmade models (usually handbuilts are especially breakable), that must be sent over the Ocean - it will be not bad idea to insure the parcel. And PERESVET Ltd. is ready to suggest you some kind of additional free "warranty" - in the case of damage of models by post service PERESVET Ltd. may suggest you some parts for repairing of damaged models FREE (e.g. with your next order).

Should I pay in advance or I may pay on delivery?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Both cases are available, but the total cost will depend on the way of payment: Prices from our regular Price-List are valid for the case of at least 50% prepayment during seven business days after the receipt of the invoice. Order will be sent as soon as possible after the receipt of payment (specific date will be discusses with the Customer). Customer may also pay after the receipt of the order (in the case of big orders) - in this case one must add 5% to the total sum and additional 5% for every 30 days after the receipt of the order (but not longer than 60 days). PERESVET Ltd. demands 100% payment in advance for all FIRST orders and at least 50% prepayment for all SMALL orders.

What is 'Special Order'?

Usually handbuilt models are produced in really small quantities (from 2-3 to 200-300 annually), so it is necessary to order the specific handbuilt model. In this case model will be produced for you personally and you will become the happy owner of real Limited Edition - e.g. model # 12! But the production of this high-quality handmade model may take from 1 week to 3 months (in some rare cases - even more, that is why one have to order the model and wait for it. This order usually is free, but SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ must be sure that you will buy this model when it will be produced for you. In some cases handmade models are supplied with special certificates that confirm the origin and the low total number of produced specific models (e.g., 100, 50 or even 5!).

What is 'Exclusive Proposal'?

Models that you can buy mainly (or only) from SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™. Usually - models produced by PERESVET Ltd. and/or produced by/for manufacturers/distributors that cooperate with PERESVET Ltd.

We are proud to be the Exclusive Exporter of many makers.

Why the difference in price between handbuilt and diecast models?

Typically, handbuilt models are 3 to 10 times more expensive than factory built models. The difference in price is due to the much higher labor content of the handbuilt model - it is the labor and the limited production you are paying for. Handbuilt models are always produced in small quantities - often very limited production runs - and often of a rarer subject which may never appear as a diecast model (because the diecast models double as 'toys for kids' and must be of well known and popular cars to be able to sell in large quantities). Tooling costs for handbuilt cars are in the low thousands of dollars but the tools are capable of producing only a few hundred models. So the cost per model is relatively high. Tooling costs for diecast models run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, but can be amortized over hundreds of thousands of models produced on factory assembly lines. So the cost per model is low.

Why are your prices lower/higher than other companies?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ establishes all prices to be competitive and actually SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ is sure that SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ prices are among the lowest (if not the lowest). These low prices are based on the fact that PERESVET Ltd. sells among other own models, and in the majority of cases PERESVET Ltd. has direct contacts with manufacturers or distributors. SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ prices depend on the quantities one orders, but even prices for 1 piece are among the lowest. And plus to it SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ suggests special discounts that depend on the total cost of the order. See notes to our Price-Lists. And in any case - you buy Russian models directly from Russia! For big orders, SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ will be happy to discuss extra discounts. The only thing that increases the cost of SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ offer (and which does not depend on SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™) is the cost of delivery. But since models usually are not heavy, and since the cost of delivery depends on the total weight of the parcel, the cost of delivery adds not big money to the final cost of your purchase. Simply compare SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ prices with the prices of the leaders of the market. If you will find prices lower - inform SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™!

Now SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ offers NEW 1:43 high-quality handmade limited editions of models of racecar transporters, buses, trolley buses, streetcars, etc. produced by St.Petersburg Tram Collection with 5% discount as compared with St.Petersburg Tram Collection ORIGINAL prices (while quantities last)! Visit St.Petersburg Tram Collection Official Site at http://www.sptc.spb.ru/, make your choice, but place your order by writing to barmasov@pobox.spbu.ru, and you will save 5% as minimum as compared with Producer Price and 20-50% as compared with Suggested Retail Prices! You will never find those items cheaper.

Are discounts available?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Yes! In the case of payment in advance (even partial), in the case of "big" orders, for Customers from CIS countries, for Customers from remote (from St.Petersburg) places. And do not forget that price of one item depends on the number of ordered pieces of each item.

Is it profitable to buy models directly from PERESVET Ltd.?

Definitely "Yes" if you are a wholesale buyer - SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ offers the best choice of Russian/CIS-made scale models and the best prices one can find for the majority of items (do not forget also about special prices and discounts for wholesale buyers). In the case of retail buying it is necessary to... calculate a little. PERESVET Ltd. retail prices are among the best too, but in this case the cost of purchase depends mainly not on the cost of a model, but on the cost of delivery, cost of customs clearance, cost of money transfer, etc. Since these costs usually do not depend seriously on the total number of models in one order, very often it is not very cheap to buy only 1 or 2 models directly from SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ - in this case contact SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ Regional Representatives / Authorized Dealers: even in the case of much higher retail prices, the final cost of the purchase may appear lower! But if you are going to buy one, two (or more) dozens of items for your collection at once - it may be more profitable to buy them directly from SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™. So - calculate, compare and decide what is more profitable and convenient in your specific case. In any case we recommend Customers from North America contact our dealers first.

Is it possible to make overhead charges lower?

What are RMIndexes®?

Those RMIndexes® are conditional (while being based on coded names of manufacturers (3 first letters/digits) and, where possible, their official catalogue numbers). They are also used in all SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ documents and by the dealers and web-sites (e.g., 1/43 Scale Models from Russia, ESWAL Miniature Imports, EWA & Miniature Cars USA Inc, OCTS, World of Russian Miniatures, etc.). They are also in use by some manufacturers. So, please mention those indexes in all your orders and questions.

Does PERESVET Ltd. offer only Russian/CIS-made scale models?

NB! PERESVET Ltd. dealers have independent trade policy, so this information regards only to PERESVET Ltd.:

Yes and No. Actually we import and sell many international brands to Russian collectors (including out-of-production models), but we do not think that it will be good idea to buy not-Russian models from Russia. That is why we do not include those models into SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ regular Price-Lists. But in some cases it is convenient to order some international brands together with Russian ones. Do not hesitate to ask questions.

  1. Illustrated articles by Alexander V. BARMASOV in a varying degree of completeness - over 80.

  2. Pictures (image files) of scale models (in JPEG format - mainly original and exclusively produced for this Project).

  3. Pictures (image files) of the prototypes of scale models (original vehicles, etc.).

  4. Information about SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™

  5. Complete SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™ Price Guide with Suggested Retail Prices and Values, Ratings (Quality/Price Ratio), Descriptions, etc. (contains approx. 5,000 items).

  6. Information how to obtain necessary models, kits or accessories, etc.

  7. Some comments on SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™.

  8. And so on and so on.

All models and prototypes are sorted by manufacturers/brands of models. Manufacturers/brands are sorted by names and by RMIndexes® - widely used for Soviet/CIS-made scale models since 1997. Text and image files are named by RMIndexes®. Big part of the information is available exclusively from this CD.

Basing on the results of the opinion poll we issue the most "simple" (and therefore cheap) versions of the CD - such that could be used with the most simple PCs, using any popular browser (as e.g. MS Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator) to get the advantage of hypertext files. Those who do not use such programs may use the simplest viewers, etc.

Vendors all over the World are invited to place orders for distribution of CD "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™" in specific regions.

Manufacturers of scale models and related products are invited to place information about their products.

Manufacturers are also invited to place their advertisements -
CDs "SCALE MODELS FROM RUSSIA™" are distributed all over the World including CIS countries, so advertisements of foreign manufacturers may be interesting for collectors from CIS countries too.

Where should I order those products?

One may order them from the Author - it is convenient to do it simultaneously with ordering models, etc. But it seems not very convenient (not very cheep) to send e.g. one CD to e.g. USA - cost of delivery will make it too expensive. In this case it will be more convenient to order those products from our USA dealers. By the way, we trade not only CDs, but also licenses on the production and distribution of the specific versions (with availability to add their personal information). Do not hesitate to ask questions.

Do you produce scale models?

Usually it takes up to 2-3 months to produce the first lot of models. Cost of one model depends on:
  • number of ordered pieces
  • main material (white metal or resin)
  • requisite quality and specification
  • type and size of model
  • quality of materials
  • total number of parts (10-80 and more)
  • opening parts
  • scale
  • way of payment
  • etc.
Basic variation usually includes rubber tires, chassis with features, highly detailed interior (with seats, steering wheel, etc.) and so on.
Any colors, logos, emblems, symbols, superscriptions, etc. Model may be even produced under your brand name. Additional features are available at extra charge for every model (insignificantly depending on quantities, materials and scales):
  • removable bonnet (hood) with poor imitation of engine
  • swinging or removable bonnet (hood) with detailed model of engine
  • swinging boot cover
  • turning front wheels
  • opening doors
  • additional parts (equipment)
  • additional features
Typically, handbuilt models are 3 to 10 times more expensive than factory built models. The difference in price is due to the much higher labor content of the handbuilt model - it is the labor and the limited production you are paying for. Handbuilt models are always produced in small quantities - often very limited production runs (usually up to 100+ copies) - and often of a rarer subject which may never appear as a diecast model (because the diecast models double as 'toys for kids' and must be of well known and popular cars to be able to sell in large quantities). At the same moment the quality of handbuilt models is usually higher than quality of factory built models. And in any case they are more valuable due to small number of copies and become real rarity immediately after the discontinuation of production. This explains why handbuilt limited editions are the best collectibles and corporative souvenirs.

Ordering exclusively total consignment of our custom made models at wholesale price starting from $20 US one becomes the World's only owner of the original collectibles with starting price from $100 US each (and rising in price constantly) and is sure that production of such models cannot be resumed in the near future due to object reasons.

Our models are distributed all over the World under many brand names, among which:
